USFWS - DESERT TORTOISE RECOVERY OFFICE; RANGE WIDE MONITORING, CA
Range-Wide Monitoring of Desert Tortoise in Critical Habitat Units in California using Line Distance Sampling Protocol. Perform surveys during spring active season for the past 16 years, ranging from 12-75 days in length. Staff and manage up to 25 biologists to conduct pedestrian surveys of assigned 12km transects. Arrange entry and safety training for work on military installations. Assist USFWS with training for surveying, handling and health assessments of DETO. Permitted by agencies to survey for, handle, excavate burrows, conduct telemetry and place/maintain radio transmitters on Desert Tortoise on BLM, NPS, and DOD lands. Long-term partnership of over 15 years. Perform as subcontractors under primary partner Kiva Biological. (Spring 2008-Present)

WASHINGTON COUNTY HCP- DESERT TORTOISE SURVEYS, St. George, UT
Primary contract holder for Washington County Habitat Conservation Plan, Zone 6. Survey for Desert Tortoise using Line Distance Sampling Methods. Assisted Washington County in adapting the protocol methods to drone calibration surveys of newly acquired conservation area. Staffed and managed a crew of 14 biologists conducting pedestrian surveys for 5 survey days. Other sensitive species in the project area include Dwarf Bear-Poppy and Gila Monster. Completed paper and electronic Survey123 data collection. (April 2022)

Worked as Authorized Biologists and field-crew leads to perform clearance surveys, control group and recipient site surveys for Desert Tortoise on over 100,00 acres. Attached radio transmitters and performed telemetry and translocation on adult and juvenile DETO. Handled over 150 tortoises and encountered over 1,000 live tortoises while surveying and performing radio telemetry. (2015-2018)

Authorized Biologist and crew lead from pre-construction and clearance surveys through translocation and long term monitoring of Desert Tortoise on large scale solar thermal electric generating plant. Duties also included animal husbandry and care of hatchling and young tortoises in head start facility, nesting bird surveys, sensitive and rare plant surveys, construction monitoring, crew training and orientation. Since 2010, we have worked with the clients listed to perform pre-construction inventory surveys, clearance surveys, telemetry and translocation for Desert Tortoise. We have also completed nesting bird surveys, Burrowing Owl surveys and buffers, and Desert Kit Fox camera trapping, hazing and den excavation in California and Nevada.
We provide construction monitoring throughout the duration of projects to help clients achieve environmental compliance and avoid delays or project shutdowns.
